Commitment to Diversity – UCSD Medical Scientist Education Program

UC San Diego’s MSTP provides research and clinical training to highly qualified students for whom prior exposure to medicine and strong research experiences indicate a commitment to a career in academic medicine. In keeping with the wide variety and collaborative nature of research in the La Jolla biomedical community, UC San Diego’s MSTP offers a wealth of scientific opportunities for its students and a flexible educational program for individual trainees.

The diversity

The UC San Diego MSTP, a federally funded program, actively seeks out women and underrepresented students and is committed to recruiting a diverse body of talented students. Out-of-state residents are considered on equal footing with other applicants. Applicants should have previous experience in research and clinical aspects of science and medicine. Interns must be US citizens or have permanent and legal residence in the United States.

Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarship

In addition to offering MD/PhD training, UCSD MSTP has developed a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. The MSTP-SURF is for undergraduate students from underrepresented minority groups and provides the opportunity to conduct biomedical research and have clinical experiences for eight weeks during the summer.
