On the occasion of the commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the death and martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal on December 30, 2021 and in time for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Department of Science and Technology of the Philippine Council for Research and Health Development (DoST-PCHRD), the council kicked off with a webinar titled “Dr. Jose Rizal, A Medical Scientist” on January 25, 2022.
DoST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña delivered his welcome message during the webinar on Rizal’s valued characteristics as a hero, scientist, and physician.
“While his contributions to the struggle for the independence of our country are undeniable and well known, his scientific career also proves to be an admirable example for aspiring scientists, researchers and doctors. Alongside our mission in the Department of Science and technology, Dr. Rizal pursued science for the people,” de la Peña said.
The webinar brought together various experts, doctors and even Rizal’s descendants to share experiences, stories and knowledge with Rizal as a medical scientist.
Jeremiah Villaroman, Rizal’s fifth-generation descendant of Saturnina Rizal, the national hero’s older sister, shared the early childhood life Rizal lived. According to him, Rizal was a very curious child and always wanted to find a solution for everything that transcended all of Rizal’s life.
